The Mohembo Bridge Project in Botswana

Our Work
A momentous undertaking: building the Mohembo Bridge

Goscor Access Solutions are proud to play a key role in the construction of the iconic Mohembo Bridge in Botswana.

This towering new landmark is set to bring new tourism and trade to the area, by improving transport connections between Botswana, Namibia, Angola, and Zambia.

The 1.2-km- cable-stayed bridge is currently being built over the Okavango River, and will connect villages east of the river on the edge of the Okavango Delta, with the rest of the country. Because Botswana is a landlocked country, easy access to ports is important.

Concord Access Solutions, Concord, and Uni-Span all worked together to supply key components used for the construction of the bridge.

Which mobile cranes were used for the Mohembo bridge project?

GAS has supplied major pieces of machinery crucial to the construction project. The bridge famously features crossed elephant-tusk-like towers, and Goscor supplied the access solutions necessary to erect these tusks. Goscor Access Solutions also supplied the machinery that was used to connect the steel cables from the bridge to the ground.

The Genie Z80/60 was one of the vehicles used on site. This articulated boom lift offers outstanding lifting versatility with up, out, and over positioning capabilities and a working height of 25 meters. The Genie SX-180 is a telescopic boom lift that can tackle the most extreme jobs with a vertical reach of 54m (making it the highest reaching Genie boom) and horizontal reach of 24m.

This project presented a massive challenge for all parties involved. Just reaching the site requires a long and arduous journey. The construction site is located two day’s drive from Gaborone, and the last 360km of the route are driven on a rough, run-down road, making it difficult to transport the equipment and supplies needed.

High flooding in 2020, as well as the Coronavirus pandemic, have had an impact on timelines over the last year, but the team has managed to bring the project close to completion.

The bridge site lies close to Botswana’s border with Namibia, so once complete, the bridge will provide easier access to Namibian ports. The new bridge will also improve transport connections to Angola and Zambia, which both have borders close to the site. The full project also includes the construction of 3 km of approach roads which will connect Mohembo with existing road networks, as well as storm-water drainage works, electrical installations, and street lighting.
